WSARA 2018 Convention and Introduction of New Outreach Coordinator
The Washington Alliance for Retired Americans Educational Fund (WSARA-EF) will be hosting our 2018 Annual Convention on Tuesday, May 15th at the Washington Education Association (WEA) Union Hall located at 32032 Weyerhaeuser Way S, Federal WA 98001.
Registration and check-in will open starting at 9:00 am outside the Fern Room. The Convention will begin at 10 AM and end at 3:00 PM. A light continental breakfast and buffet lunch are included in the cost of $30.00 per delegate and $15.00 guest registration fee.
Lisa Brown, Democratic candidate for the 5th Congressional Race will be our featured guest speaker, along with national ARA Executive Director Rich Fiesta and others on state and federal issues that impact seniors.
Each May, the Administration for Community Living celebrates Older Americans Month to recognize older Americans for their contributions to the nation. That’s why we are adopting their 2018 theme, Engage at Every Age! as our Convention theme this year. It emphasizes that no one is too old (or young) to take part in activities that can enrich one’s physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Engaging in political action, offering your wisdom and experience to the next generation and gaining education on issues that impact seniors are examples of activities that contribute to our mission of fighting to protect and expand retirement security for all Americans. With our earned benefits under greater attack than ever before, now is the time to engage with WSARA and we hope you will join us at our Convention! We are excited to announce that our expansion plans for this year are moving forward. With support from the Washington State Labor Council, AFL-CIO, we just opened a new leased office in their Olympia building. And we are delighted to welcome aboard our new intern Amber Powell to staff it.
Amber is a career service professional and will serve as our Outreach Coordinator for WSARA. She moved to Tacoma, Washington from Clarksville, Tennessee in 2012 to pursue studies in psychology and social justice. She holds a Bachelor of Psychology and Cultural Studies from Evergreen State College and is due to graduate with a Master of Public Administration this June. Amber is passionate about public service and advocates on behalf of underserved populations. She is self-motivated, vivacious and a strong campaigner. Amber’s extroversion, passion and drive for social and economic justice make her a valuable addition to WSARA and the senior community. In her spare time, Amber enjoys adventures and educational opportunities with her two daughters, Avan and Abery.
Our new address is 906 Columbia St. SW Suite 202, Olympia, WA 98501. To contact Amber, her e-mail is amber.vaughan.powell@gmail.com or call 931-206-6585. We hope she will have many opportunities to meet our members in the future.
